As the title Tanbiroku suggests, the work is united by a sensual gaze that seems to indulge in beauty. The setting is an old Western-style house standing in Honmoku, Yokohama. Within this space, Shinkai’s alluring sensual beauty gradually comes into sharper relief through five scenes, quietly revealing one aspect of a richness that had been hidden away.

The five chapters are: a provocation beginning with wine on a sofa; an urgent seduction in an office; sensuality after losing at chess; undressing by a window and sheets; and temptation while choosing evening attire. Through both photographs and video, viewers can experience “Maki Shinkai as she is now.”

After the shoot, Shinkai said, “It was shot in a very alluring atmosphere, so I think you’ll get to see lots of grown-up sides of me. Please look forward to it.” Of an outfit pairing a tight skirt with a garter belt, she smiled and said, “It’s different from my usual look, and I was told it suits me very well.” Asked about her favorite scene, she answered without hesitation: “There is a scene where I take off my clothes, and I think the neckline looks really sexy and beautiful.” “I want to make tonight an unforgettable night.” The meaning of those words, which Maki Shinkai addresses to viewers, can be discovered in the main work.

Maki Shinkai’s Comment

Looking back after the shoot, Shinkai said with a smile, “It was incredibly hectic and over in an instant, but it was so much fun. I think you’ll get to see many different sides of me, from a cool side to a grown-up side, so I’m excited.”

Of the atmosphere on set, she also said, “It was friendly and so much fun, and I think we were able to work while playing around,” suggesting that she and the photographer were perfectly in sync. “The photographer was so funny that I kept laughing so hard I could have died,” she said.

Asked about her favorite outfit, she immediately named the chess scene: “I really love the white jacket with white underwear. It’s stylish.” On the other hand, she gave a wry smile and said, “It was a little difficult because I had to think about the timing for dropping the chess pieces.” About the bed scene, she laughed: “We shot it while I was rolling around, so I got so sleepy that I almost fell asleep halfway through, but I think I was able to relax.”
