Her regular training followed a break from gravure during which, she says, she gained considerable weight. Swimming was already part of her life long before acting: she took lessons for seven years from the middle year of kindergarten, competed, and specialized in freestyle. She still uses the pool at her gym, though these days she wears a rash guard rather than a racing swimsuit.
From the pool to the stands
The shoot took place on the day of Japan’s World Cup match against Sweden, and Miyazaki arrived at the morning meeting point in a blue Japan shirt carrying goalkeeper Zion Suzuki’s name and number. She had become a fan after watching his saves against the Netherlands. Thinking a goalkeeper’s shirt would stand out, she had an Adidas shop customize the standard blue version.
She watched the Brazil match at a public screening in a Shinjuku cinema, where she celebrated a goal by high-fiving people she had never met. Her interest in the sport goes back to elementary school, when she joined a local club. The mixed team included boys, and she says she was unable to play in matches, but the experience stayed with her. She now goes to stadiums when time allows and also attends professional baseball games.
Miyazaki describes the rest of her summer as similarly active. She had a barbecue with friends and travelled to Okinawa and Taiwan with her mother. Her mother is from Myanmar, and the two visit about once a year, often adding stops elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Singapore is a particular favorite because Miyazaki has relatives there.
Acting beyond Japan
Miyazaki became widely known as Sononi in TV Asahi’s Avataro Sentai Donbrothers, broadcast in 2022 and 2023. The series has also aired in China, and invitations to events in Shanghai have shown her how far the role travelled. Because she can speak Burmese in everyday conversation, she hopes eventually to work in an overseas production.
Her other ambitions include live-action adaptations of anime or manga and horror films. She has no interest in encountering a real ghost, she says, but would like to experience that fear through a role.
Miyazaki describes her approach to scripts as “sleep memory”: after reading her lines and sleeping, she can recall them, while last-minute changes on set are harder because there is no time for that process.
