July 22 has become a precise measure of Chitose Yoshino’s gravure career. Exactly eight years after her first shoot, she was back in front of the camera on the same date for a summer feature in Weekly Playboy No. 37.

Yoshino says the new photographs carry the confidence she has built across those eight years. A water scene even produced a rainbow in the frame, giving the summer concept an unplanned visual detail. The anniversary itself, however, brought her back to a much less assured beginning.

Her first gravure job was a DVD shoot rather than a magazine assignment. Yoshino had just moved from Saga to Tokyo at 18 and was unsettled by the small swimwear prepared for the session. When the shoot moved into scenes of her cleaning in swimwear, she says the confusion and anxiety left her in tears.

The release event changed her relationship with the work. About 100 people attended, and Yoshino says their support gave her confidence after years of feeling self-conscious about her body. She has since released 25 DVDs. Looking at the new Weekly Playboy feature, she believes that sustained experience now shows in her expression.

A second youth and a future behind the scenes

Yoshino’s career now also includes Amai Mono Tsumiawase, where she is the idol group’s pink member. She had admired AKB48’s Mayu Watanabe since fifth grade and quietly hoped to become an idol herself. Performing with a group has felt like club activity, she says, and like enjoying a second youth.

Gravure remains her starting point. Yoshino says she wants to continue with her own aesthetic for as long as there is demand, but she is also thinking about work on the other side of the camera. Having moved from Saga at 18 and accumulated experience as a performer, she believes she could help younger idols and gravure talent through setbacks that might otherwise stop their careers. Her goal is to keep performing while also producing and supporting other women.
