What seems like a silly game has a “surprisingly deep” story

With its premise of being reincarnated as a hamster and living with three beautiful sisters, the game has drawn attention around the world. The demo, now available, offers provocative experiences such as the eldest sister, played by Sayaka Tomaru, in a teacher costume; the second sister, played by Momoha Takatsuru, doing sexy yoga; and the youngest sister, played by Shiori Ikemoto, offering a strawberry with an “ahh.”

But the full version has a “surprisingly deep” story in store.

The game’s chief writer is Ken Shimomura, who has handled the main scenarios for numerous games including Chain Chronicle, Tenkabusen: ZAN, and Onmyoji. Players can enjoy a story full of mysteries, including where the three sisters’ father has gone and what it will take for all three sisters to be happy.

A former professional baseball umpire and a viola player are also hooked on Hamukoi

FRIDAY Digital is running reaction articles from people who have actually experienced Hamukoi.

Mr. Sakai during his umpiring days. Quoted from his X account.

Ryotaro Sakai, a former professional baseball umpire who shares the realities of baseball rules and umpiring, said of the game: “It’s good for people who have had stressful jobs like umpiring.”

Umpires often encounter players outside games and need to be careful even when drinking out. With constant business trips as well, Sakai seems to have felt that Hamukoi could be healing.

Which heroine appealed to Sakai, who says, “My strike zone is narrow”? Read the full reaction article here.

This summer, Iino will tour four cities nationwide: Nagoya, Kagawa, Tokyo, and Fukuoka.

Kazuhide Iino, a viola player who also appeared on the reality dating show The Bachelorette Japan 3, also experienced Hamukoi. He commented on the second sister, Futaba: “I can relate to how she is torn between her dreams and job hunting.”

Futaba is a character caught between her dream of pursuing classical ballet and the reality that she should get a job for her family. For Iino, who had experienced uncertainty over whether to pursue his own music or join an orchestra and choose stability, Futaba’s story seems to have resonated deeply.

A major topic in overseas media as well

The game faced the accident of having its Steam page removed last year, but it returned in April after revisions. At that time, its eccentric concept and beautiful visuals attracted attention in Japan and abroad, with people talking about the return of a “crazy Japanese live-action game.”

When the title was announced for Steam Next Fest, former Liberal Democratic Party secretary-general Nobuteru Ishihara, who tried the game, commented: “This is a little crazy. If there were games this realistic, there would be even fewer children.” His comment was covered by outlets including the UK’s Dexerto and Mexico’s MasGamers, drawing a major response.

According to MasGamers’ official Facebook, the post received about 6,000 likes and about 300 comments. According to Dexerto’s official website, the official X post introducing the article received about 70,000 views and about 2,500 likes.

Cast members’ early-play video is also available

A video is now available following Sayaka Tomaru, Momoha Takatsuru, and Shiori Ikemoto as they tried Hamukoi early at Tokyo Game Show last autumn. It is a video that becomes even more enjoyable after playing the demo.

Joint real-life event for Hamukoi and Beppin-so

A real-life event will be held in Tokyo on Saturday, July 18. Together with Sensitive! Love Antenna Binbin Beppin-so, jointly produced by TV Asahi and Aiming, the event will celebrate live-action games from Japan.

Cast members from both Hamukoi and Beppin-so will appear. The program will include public gameplay and talks revealing behind-the-scenes details of filming, among other content.

Date: Saturday, July 18, 2026

Cast: Sayaka Tomaru, Momoha Takatsuru, and Shiori Ikemoto (Hamukoi); Nao Hanashiro, Non Nagisa, and Anon Mai (Binbin-so)

Venue: ALAWA (Roppongi-itchome)
