Summer Koshien Is About to Begin: Koshien 2026, a Complete Data Guide to All 49 Representatives, Is Now on Sale
Asahi Shimbun Publications Co., Ltd. released the AERA Extra edition Koshien 2026 on Monday, August 3, 2026. It is a complete strength-data guide to the 49 representative teams competing in the 108th National High School Baseball Championship, which opens on Wednesday, August 5.
It includes the popular annual fill-in tournament bracket, along with extensive gravure pages and feature articles that make watching on television even more enjoyable. This year, it adds eight pages of color gravure. Please pick up a copy.
Team profiles were written by Asahi Shimbun reporters who covered regional tournaments around Japan. Drawing on the perspective of reporters who have watched the players’ performances up close, the guide sharply analyzes the strength of the representative schools alongside tables containing detailed team and individual results. The results of regional tournaments and “Coaches Up Close” are also not to be missed.
The gravure section is full of highlights. Photographers were dispatched to regional tournaments throughout Japan in a thorough search for promising players. In a nine-page, all-color opening feature titled “2026 Players to Watch: Toward the Summer Summit!”, it introduces 14 players: Shoki Oda (Kanagawa, Yokohama, pitcher, third year); Eiji Kinoshita (Yamaguchi, Takagawa Gakuen, pitcher, third year); Rintora Yamada (Wakayama, Chiben Wakayama, catcher, third year); Taisho Furushiro (Iwate, Hanamaki Higashi, infielder, third year); Takanao Kawakubo (Aomori, Aomori Yamada, pitcher, third year); Masato Saeki (Saitama, Hanazono Tokuharu, catcher, third year); Ryusei Mizoguchi (Toyama, Takaoka Commercial, outfielder, third year); Riku Takabe (Shizuoka, Seirei Christopher, pitcher, third year); Hideya Iwai (Hyogo, Yashiro, pitcher, third year); Daiki Nishimura (Tokushima, Naruto Uzushio, pitcher, third year); Gaku Ninomiya (Chiba, Takudai Koryo, pitcher, third year); Ryotaro Saito (Kumamoto, Ariake, pitcher, third year); Daisuke Miki (Osaka, Riseisha, catcher, third year); and Ryosuke Sueyoshi (Okinawa, Okinawa Shogaku, pitcher, third year). Their on-field presence can be seen in dynamic photographs.
At this March’s World Baseball Classic (WBC), Japan finished in the quarterfinals and did not repeat as champion, but its play was captivating. “WBC Samurai in Their High School Days” features photographs from the high school years of Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Dodgers / Hanamaki Higashi, Iwate), Yoshinobu Yamamoto (Los Angeles Dodgers / Miyakonojo, Miyazaki), Hiromi Itoh (Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters / Komazawa University Tomakomai, Southern Hokkaido), and Kazuma Okamoto (Toronto Blue Jays / Chiben Gakuen, Nara).
Young professional baseball players are also featured in the gravure section. “A Bright Future! ROOKIES” includes a conversation between Haruki Mori (Orix Buffaloes / Osaka Toin, Osaka) and Atsuya Fujikawa (Orix Buffaloes / Nobeoka Gakuen, Miyazaki), as well as interviews with Ren Hirakawa (Hiroshima Toyo Carp / Sapporo Kokusai Joho, Southern Hokkaido, and Sendai University) and Genki Ishigaki (Chiba Lotte Marines / Kendai Takasaki, Gunma).
For “Samurai Mentors,” the publication visited teachers who knew members of Japan’s WBC team during their high school years. It spoke with the mentors of Munetaka Murakami (Chicago White Sox / Kyushu Gakuin, Kumamoto), Hiroto Takahashi (Chunichi Dragons / Chukyo University Chukyo, Aichi), and Atsuki Taneichi (Chiba Lotte Marines / Hachinohe Institute of Technology First, Aomori).
Masumi Kuwata, a legend who made five consecutive Koshien appearances with PL Gakuen and recorded 20 wins in total, is now CBO, Chief Baseball Officer, of Oisix Niigata Albirex Baseball Club and also manages the Samurai Japan U-12 national team. He continues to watch the realities of baseball. In “Masumi Kuwata Interview: Change to Protect,” he discusses the changing landscape of high school baseball.
Other gravure articles include “The Functional Beauty of the Unconventional: Pitchers with Unique Forms,” “Let’s Go to the Baseball Museum!,” “Mature and Fulfilling College Baseball,” “Why Can Small Left-Handers Become Aces?,” and “Asahi Broadcasting Radio: My Hometown’s Best Game.” Feature articles include “Miyake Town, Nara: The Town of Baseball Gloves,” “New High School Baseball Rules Q&A,” and “Shining Memories of Midsummer.”
The record pages are also extensive. “2026 Regional Tournament Records” contains the full records of all 49 regional tournaments, in which 3,363 teams took part. Why not look for the results of your hometown alma mater? “The Tournament’s History Through the 107th: Complete Tournament Records” compactly contains the complete records of the championship from the first tournament in 1915 through the 107th in 2025. Looking through the records vividly brings back memories of summer Koshien from years past.
“1915-2025: Participating Schools and Champions” provides a prefecture-by-prefecture table of schools that participated in and won the championship, allowing readers to trace the history of their hometown representative school. “Most Home Runs, RBIs, Strikeouts: A Collection of Records That Remain in Tournament History” is organized into cumulative records, tournament records, single-game records, and single-inning records.
