Hotel Napoleon
Episodes unique to a woman in her 20s visiting Showa-era love hotels alone
From the startling story of being asked, “Miss, you’re not here to kill yourself, are you?” upon entering a hotel, to the behind-the-scenes details of reporting trips that use overnight buses to save 11 hours’ worth of transportation costs.
The book introduces the spectacular sight of an air shooter seen from the front desk, stories told by the legendary inventor of the “rotating bed,” and neon tubes imbued with the spirit of Showa-era craftspeople. It also features astonishing facilities such as a transparent bathtub on the second floor and a space-shuttle-shaped bed viewed from the first floor, as well as supporting players of Showa-era love hotels: hotel-name matches and an ultra-retro electric massager that can be used for ¥200 per 20 minutes.
It is also packed with valuable records and know-how, including how the love-hotel industry changed dramatically after the 1985 enforcement of the new Entertainment Business Act and how to build trusting relationships with hotel owners, a key to successful reporting.
